Renovation of Living Area

2014

The Wades are a very casual, well travelled and active Australian family. They lived in a big ground floor apartment  that had a nice  big garden in Discovery Bay, Hong Kong. They wanted to re-organise their living area into a space that reflected their lifestyle. They have  3 young boys and a girl. Each one was busy with their own school & extra curricular activities which resulted to a lot of stuff and equipment. Over the years their living room slowly morphed  into a storage space . It became unusable, cluttered & very inefficient.

The Design Brief:

To transform that room  back into a living area, an open welcoming space that can be used by the kids and still have storage creatively added for all their musical instruments,  CD collections, inherited books  etc...

The Design Solution:

They had 3 very colourful paintings from a talented Australian painter that caught my eye and we agreed that the design would pick-up its inspiration from these three. I kept the base color of the living area white in contrast  to all the colours and textures of the paintings.  I added a ceiling light trough which also doubled as a shelf for all their precious books and nick-nacks . At the end of the space towards the sliding doors to the garden is where I located their music corner . This is where you will find the dad’s guitars and retro speakers plus their numerous CD and LP collection. The colourful patterns created by the vertically arranged books, CD’s and LP’s mimicked the paintings linear patterns, so it did not look cluttered at all.

The parents wanted to see their kids do their homework together in the living area, so I designed a long table height bench that had lots of storage under and can transform into pull-out desks for the kids to use when studying.  They were also into making a lot of puzzles and crafts together and the mom wanted a coffee table that could house all the current puzzles and art work in trays that could be pulled out easily when needed.

At the end the new living area looked whimsical, casual and very organised. The clients were very happy of the outcome.
